What is Recapping?

Recapping involves the replacement of all electrolytic capacitors within an amplifier. This process is undertaken to restore the unit to its original performance specifications or to enhance reliability and sound quality by integrating modern components. It is an essential aspect of long-term maintenance for audio equipment.

What Are Electrolytic Capacitors?

Electrolytic capacitors are key electronic components used to store and regulate electrical energy. They are commonly found in critical sections of an audio amplifier, such as the main filter capacitors, power amplifier stage, preamplifier stage, and power supply circuit. These capacitors play a vital role in signal integrity, power filtering, and overall system stability. However, due to their inherent chemical composition, electrolytic capacitors have a finite lifespan, typically ranging from 10 to 30 years, depending on their quality, operating conditions, and thermal stress. As they age, their performance deteriorates, leading to increased noise, diminished fidelity, and potential operational failures.

Do I Need to Recap My Amplifier?

Recapping is a meticulous and labor-intensive process, which is generally not required for the vast majority of amplifier repairs. In most cases, addressing specific issues within the circuit resolves performance problems without necessitating a full recap. However, for those seeking to achieve peak performance or restore legacy equipment to its original specifications, a complete recap can offer significant benefits. At Platinum Audio, this service is primarily recommended for high-value or personal favorite amplifiers. By replacing aging capacitors with modern, audio-grade components, we ensure improved reliability, reduced noise, and optimal sound reproduction.

Capacitor Myths

A common misconception among clients is the belief that a full recap is necessary to resolve any amplifier malfunction. Unfortunately, this has led to cases where individuals were subjected to unnecessary services by less qualified technicians. Another prevalent myth involves the identification of manufacturer-applied glue beneath capacitors as evidence of leakage or damage. This glue, used to secure components during manufacturing, is often mistaken for capacitor failure. Platinum Audio takes a pragmatic and honest approach, ensuring clients receive only the services their equipment genuinely requires.

Replacement Methodology

One common request from clients, or a practice observed in other workshops, involves removing capacitors for measurement to assess their condition. At Platinum Audio, we recognize that the majority of the effort lies in carefully desoldering and removing these components. Once a capacitor has been removed, it is far more efficient and reliable to replace it with a modern, high-quality counterpart than to reinstall the original. This approach eliminates potential future failures and ensures that the amplifier maintains optimal performance. Our methodology is rooted in efficiency, precision, and the philosophy of “repairing right the first time.”

Recap Rates

Recapping services are billed on an hourly basis, with typical costs averaging around $500 for parts and labor. The final cost varies depending on the amplifier model, the quantity and accessibility of capacitors, and the specific values of replacement components. Due to the wide variability in designs and requirements across different amplifiers, Platinum Audio conducts a thorough assessment to provide an accurate estimate tailored to the individual piece of equipment.

Disclaimer

Platinum Audio has proudly operated for over 10 years without incident; however, we must outline our policy regarding unforeseen circumstances. While we take every precaution to protect our clients' valuable equipment, Platinum Audio cannot be held responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen property due to extenuating circumstances such as theft, fire, natural disasters, or other uncontrollable events. We strongly recommend that clients maintain adequate property insurance to cover such situations.

Our extensive experience and meticulous approach ensure the highest level of care when working on your equipment. However, due to the nature of used and vintage equipment, unforeseen issues can arise, such as the failure of old or worn-out parts. We are always delicate during our procedures and will inform clients in advance if a procedure carries significant risks. Nonetheless, if a part fails during testing, assembly, or disassembly, Platinum Audio cannot be held responsible for such occurrences.

For clients shipping their equipment, we strongly recommend using insured shipping services. Any damage sustained during shipping remains the responsibility of the client.

Platinum Audio values the trust of its clients and strives to maintain the highest standards of service. However, we have encountered instances where local competitors have attempted to exploit our expertise by bringing their clients' equipment to us for repair. If equipment is brought to Platinum Audio on behalf of another party, this must be clearly stated in advance so that the appropriate rate can be applied. Failure to disclose such arrangements may result in consultation rates exceeding our normal hourly rates by a factor of 10 and could lead to legal action. We reserve the right to take necessary steps to protect our business interests and intellectual property.
